Public Banking v/s Private Banking

Currently, there are dozens of private banking facilities throughout the world that offer parents the option of storing their baby's umbilical cord blood for possible future use. While this option is beneficial to those families who present a medical risk, the private banking method removes the life-saving stem cell units from the public pool. In this way, storage compromises the ability to increase the chance of suitable matches for needy patients.

Through donation programs, like Babies for Life, stem cells units obtained from umbilical cord blood are placed on international registries, such as the Caitlin Raymond International Registry in Massachusetts. In this way, if a patient requires a transplant and does not have a familial match, he or she can conduct a search for an unrelated blood donor. World wide, there are only about 76,000 units available, compared to the nearly half million needed for a suitable public pool.

Babies for Life is the only donation program in the world that is exclusively a donor program with an education and information focus. Additionally, it will fund an endowment which will provide assistance for donors who in the future might find themselves in need of a transplant from the public registries.
